Galveston Island Mardi Gras

Party Prior To Lent - Texas Style

By Danno Wise, About.com

Set to kick off Jan. 25, Galveston’s 2008 Mardi Gras is a 12 day, 11 night party prior to lent. Not as famous as Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans or Mobile, the Galveston event is nonetheless packed with tradition and, more importantly, packed with fun.

Of course, Mardi Gras revelers will be dressed in costume as they wander the streets, listening to the more than 30 bands which will perform on the two stages set up in the Bud Light Entertainment District. Mardi Gras goers will also be treated to several parades and processions, including the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius "A Celebration of the Renaissance" parade at noon on Jan. 26 and the “Fat Tuesday” parade on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in the historic Strand District.

However, if you are heading to Galveston during late January or early February, keep in mind Mardi Gras won’t be the only game in town. Galveston is full of attractions, including Moody Gardens and the Bishop’s Palace.

Also bear in mind, whether you are heading to Mardi Gras, sight-seeing or just wanting to hit the beach, Galveston’s hotels, motels and condos will be booking up fast, so don’t spare another minute in making your reservation.
